The Ocean Traveler combines new features expressly developed for difficult environments, rich in salty water, sand, mud and high humidity levels with the compactness of the Traveler family. Gitzo Ocean Traveler castings are made of uncoated Stainless Steel and manufactured with a unique process to guarantee high precision and ultra thin components. A special surface treatment, normally used for surgery equipment, completely closes any porosity at microscopic level ensuring to eliminate any anchoring point for corroding agents. The beautiful and revolutionary design brings a new higher quality standard in the market. | It has been developed by advanced 3D modelling software to ensure the maximum stiffness of the structure with the minimum weight. Gitzo 6X carbon fiber tubes and G-Lock further enhance its outstanding performance. Another key plus is the innovative Ocean-Lock, a perfected G-Lock system that, thanks to special inserts at both ends, minimises the amount of water and debris that may enter tubes and locking mechanisms. The upper Stainless Steel leg ends are provided with a special funnel-like hole that allows to empty the small amount of water that may have entered the tubes. The Ocean Traveler incorporates a dedicated Stainless Steel center ball head also conceived to be used in adverse conditions. It can be easily disassembled in order to clean the inner parts from salt, dust and sand that may get trapped inside. Gitzo Ocean Traveler features the latest version of the G-Lock system. The Ocean-Lock thanks to special inserts at both ends, minimises the amount of water and debris that may enter tubes and locking mechanisms. The special seals are derived from the automotive industry and meet the highest standards in terms of sealing performance and long life. The Ocean-Lock is not 100% waterproof, however it dramatically enhances the capacity of the tripod to withstand extreme environments. | The Ocean-Lock maintains the outstanding locking performance of the G-Lock providing five main advantages: 20% increased rigidity, a stronger locking, a six times faster operation and the Gravity Effect: the higher the vertical load applied to the leg is, the stronger the leg locking becomes. The fifth and most important advantage is the complete elimination of even the smallest give in the locking system, making the tripod a rock solid monolithic structure. |

extreme production process
Gitzo Ocean Traveler is designed and manufactured with the most high tech engineering processes. Each component have been designed with advanced 3D modelling software, the same used for motor racing and aerospace development. The whole project went through a deep Finite Elements Method (FEM) analysis to blend function and design together into a high performance structure. The output is a unique and highly complex design, with ultra thin walls. The only solution to manufacture it is a cutting edge technology named MIM (Metal Injection Moulding). | This technology is a three stage process and uses a soft compound made of resins mixed to thin Stainless Steel powder. The first step consists in tooling the parts using this soft compound. In the second stage these components are cooked at high temperature. The resins of the compound melt away leaving structures made of pure Stainless Steel powder. At this stage the components are as brittle as a sand castle. The third and final stage is a high temperature sintering process causing the Stainless Steel powder to melt and blend together into a solid 100% Stainless Steel part. At the end of the process components are 25% smaller than the original size at step 1. |
